EXAMPLE ARTIST STATEMENT

Below is a space where you can add or draft your own example artist statement. You can use this as a starting point or refine it over time.

My artist statement (copyrighted)

Coming from a small town and family heritage of farming, I have visually seen the land developing over time. I have seen and felt both the impacts of climate change and urbanization within my community.

As a mixed media artist, I am interested in expressing the rural landscape in an abstract and poetic way through drawings and installations. Through the transformation of often everyday items like jeans and maps; cutting, twisting, soaking, tearing become performed repeated actions to the objects. The process of the work becomes important in communicating the transformation of the land. I play with the relationship of what is fragile versus what is strong in material choices. The landscape remains delicate due to human impact but yet strong for the life growing on it. How can we better protect the land we care about?

Much of my current practice involves working outdoors as my studio and using paper to add or transform an area of a landscape that is close to me and I have spent time with. I see both the process of making the work and documenting the work in a photograph as the artwork.

Everyday objects in our lives are embedded with meaning and filled with memories of a past life left behind. What happens when the function is stripped away from something? Is it still the same object, or does it morph and hold a new identity? I wished time would slow down. When you linger, moments of unexpected can happen. I begin to notice things, to see changes even within a small patch of grass. When I’m outside I can stop and appreciate the small details and make comparisons to what was. I can hang onto moments through both photographs and memory.

My work embodies a sense of time and many projects imply a sense of infinity or are ongoing. Time relates to an infinite series of alterations in an environment that make up our daily existence. The landscape itself acts as an archive retaining all changes it faces.

What is an Artist Statement?

An artist statement is a short piece of writing that explains your artwork, your ideas, and your process. It helps viewers, teachers, galleries, or admissions teams better understand what you create and why you create it.

It doesn’t need to be overly formal or filled with complicated language. A strong artist statement is clear, personal, and specific to your work.

Artist Statement Review

Your artist statement is one of the most important pieces of your application — and one of the hardest things to write about yourself.

Whether you are a teen applying to art school or an emerging artist seeking professional feedback, I will review your artist statement and give you clear, specific guidance on what is working, what to refine, and how to stay within the word count without losing the heart of what you are trying to say.

You will leave with a statement that sounds like you — and reads like a confident, practised artist.

What Is Included?

When you submit your artist statement for review, here is exactly what you receive:

Detailed written feedback on your current draft — what is communicating well, what is unclear, and where the reader loses the thread of your artistic voice.

Specific ideas for what to add — concepts, descriptions, or context that would strengthen the statement and give the reader a clearer picture of your work and your practice.

Specific ideas for what to remove — so that every sentence earns its place and the statement stays within the required word count without feeling cut down or hollow.

Word count guidance tailored to your specific application or purpose — whether that is a 150-word portfolio submission, a 300-word university application, or an open-ended gallery bio.

One round of revision feedback — once you have made changes based on my notes, I will review the revised version and confirm that it is reading clearly and confidently.

You will receive all feedback in a clear, easy-to-follow format that respects your voice and your vision. My job is not to rewrite your statement for you — it is to help you say what you already mean, more clearly and more compellingly.

Completed in 2-3 business days or with an express fee.

Why is an Artist Statement Important?

An artist statement gives your work a voice.

When someone looks at your art, they bring their own interpretation. Your statement helps guide that experience by offering insight into your intentions, materials, and themes.

Artist statements are especially important for:

  • College and university art applications

  • Portfolio submissions

  • Gallery exhibitions

  • Grant or residency applications

If you’re applying to an art program, your statement can make a big difference. It shows how you think, how you reflect on your work, and how seriously you take your creative process.

Even if your artwork is strong, a confusing or unclear statement can weaken your overall application.

If you’re unsure what to include, start by answering a few simple questions:

  • What do you make?

  • What themes or ideas are you exploring?

  • What materials and processes do you use?

  • Why is this work meaningful to you?

From there, you can shape your answers into a short, cohesive paragraph.

HOW I HELP WITH ARTIST STATEMENTS

Writing an artist statement is not just about describing your work—it’s about choosing the right words, editing carefully, and knowing what to leave out.

I offer artist statement reviews where I give detailed feedback based on both your writing and your artwork. This means I’m not just looking at your words in isolation—I’m helping you align your statement with what you’re actually creating.

For example, I recently worked with a high school student who was applying to college art programs. She had strong ideas but was struggling to fit everything into the required word count.

Together, we:

  • Clarified her main themes

  • Removed unnecessary repetition

  • Chose more precise, meaningful language

  • Shaped her statement to meet the word limit without losing depth

By the end, she had a clear, focused artist statement that supported her portfolio and reflected her voice.

Who is This Service for?

Artist statement reviews are especially helpful for:

  • High school students applying to art programs

  • Teens building or refining their portfolios

  • Artists preparing for exhibitions or submissions

  • Anyone who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to describe their work

If you’ve been looking at example artist statement after example artist statement and still feel unsure, having personalized feedback can make the process much easier.
