Symmetry Worksheets for Middle Schoolers

Middle schoolers are creative, energetic, and full of potential—but as any teacher or homeschool parent knows, they also thrive with structure and clear expectations.

That’s exactly why symmetry drawing is such a powerful activity for grades 5–8. It’s focused, calming, and skill-building—and best of all, it feels like art. If you’ve been looking for a ready-to-go lesson that promotes concentration, attention to detail, and confidence, this resource is for you.

What Are Symmetry Worksheets?

This printable download features age-appropriate, high-interest symmetry drawing worksheets designed to help middle school students:

  • Strengthen observational skills

  • Practice drawing and shading techniques

  • Understand the artistic principle of symmetry

  • Build confidence through structured art-making

Each worksheet includes a partially completed drawing for students to finish symmetrically. The images are fun and varied—engaging without being too juvenile or too complex.

Why Middle Schoolers Love It

Symmetry drawing hits the sweet spot: it’s creative, but not overwhelming. For students who sometimes feel unsure of their art skills, this activity gives them just enough of a starting point to help them succeed.

It teaches patience, focus, and visual analysis—and students are often surprised by how impressive their finished pieces look!

This resource helps with:

  • Fine motor skills

  • Left-brain/right-brain integration

  • Mindfulness and focus

How to Use These Symmetry Worksheets

Using these symmetry drawing worksheets is a very rewarding experience for middle school students. My middle school students have loved doing this on a repeat basis throughout the school year. You can use the symmetry worksheets as daily sketchbook practice or once a week. It can also be a great early finisher activity, if students are finished their work or projects early.

Students are able to see their progress and see how realistic their symmetrical drawing can be. They can also choose from the different teams to create a drawing on a topic that personally interests them. That's what my students love the most about it.

Celebrate the Holidays or Seasons in Your Middle School Classroom

We have also used these symmetry worksheets to celebrate different holidays or seasons during the school year. For example, around Halloween, I printed off some of the Halloween symmetry worksheets from the fall and Halloween symmetry resource, and I photocopied them students got to choose between drawing a pumpkin or a skull, and then we had a competition and voted for who completed the most realistic symmetrical drawing, and I gave a prize of a Halloween eraser to the students who won based off of the students votes. This was just a really fun way to celebrate Halloween in our grade 5 classroom.
